The Abiqua Studio, in Marquam, Oregon, is an idea that Jon Deshler has been working towards since he started out as a commercial photographer in SE Portland, OR in 1988.

This work & teaching space in a beautiful rural environment, represents the balanced approach of a seasoned professional with those things that he has learned to hold dear within the creative life, in an ever evolving and changing world. 


Photographer & musician - Jon Deshler started out in the 1970's as a teenage jazz photographer and trumpet student in Los Angeles. A graduate of the prestigious Pasadena, Art Center College of Design, his clients over the last thirty years have included: AFLAC, Consumer Reports  HP, In Focus, Intel, Kaiser, Kodak, LA Stage, Lionel, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, Nike, Nintendo, Nokia, Office of the President of the United States of America, Panasonic, People's Bank, Southern Comfort, One Lambda, Oregon Symphony, Sequent, Sony, Wacker Siltronic, Wacom, Warn, Willamette Industries, Willamette Week, Xerox, YMCA, and many more. His work has won honors and awards from Communication Arts, Lauziers Archive, The Rosey Awards, and more. 


In 2013 Mr. Deshler had a One Man Exhibit, at the Valley Performing Arts Center Gallery, on the campus of Cal State Northridge, entitled Jazz Passages - a historical retrospective of his earliest jazz performance photography in Los Angeles. This exhibit was held over for a four month stay. In 2012 Howard Rumsey said of Deshler's jazz work, "Spectacular!"  This archive can be viewed by appointment at the Abiqua Studio.

Mr. Deshler has performed jazz, blues, and gospel music at venues around the country: the Baked Potato - Los Angeles, The World Stage - Los Angeles, Buddy Guy's Club - Chicago, B.B. Kings -Universal City, The Winningstad Theater - Portland, OR, Clinton Street Theater - Portland, American Legion Post 398 - Harlem, NY, Jazz Heritage Park - New Orleans, the Vancouver Ave First Baptist Church - Portland, OR, Unity Church- Los Angeles, and many more. Mr. Deshler has performed with Julianne Johnson, Michael Allen Harrison, Theloneous Dub, Janice Scroggins, George Mitchell, Marylin Keller, Laura Cunard, Joe Vento, and many more.

After years of self-employment in the creative fields, and decades of reinvention across a multitude of genres, Mr. Deshler is now offering workshops and lessons, with a particular emphasis on the replenishing of the creative spirit and connecting to your essence, in individual and small group sessions in and around his country studio, forty miles southeast of Portland, Oregon, in an intimate setting with an abundance of fresh air. The intrinsic equities of our location are quite spectacular, including but not limited to, the world famous Mt Angel Abbey, dozens of waterfalls nearby, golden agricultural landscapes, mother nature at every turn, and small friendly communities where character and characters abound.


With a knack for all forms of communication particularly around the arts, photography, nature, human development, and music, Mr. Deshler has become a conduit to the illumination that leads to your authentic and inspired voice as expressed in your work.


Mr. Deshler is a master of his crafts and the creative process , including but not limited to - studio & location photography, light painting, traditional and digital techniques and processes, and is a master printer in digital and traditional processes including B&W silver, and the platinum/palladium printing process.
